Laura Steele '03

Artist in Residence

Laura's artistic practice embraces a multitude of mediums including photography, video, installation and performance. She has received numerous awards for her work, including the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in 2004. Her work has been shown widely in venues such as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Bard College, Meridian Gallery (San Francisco, CA), and Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center (NYC).

Laura earned their BA from Bard College in 2003.

"An idea is only the beginning of the creative process, the seed from which a body of work develops. But without a solid understanding of photography's visual language, and a mastery of it's tools, the artist's ability to articulate her idea is limited. Embracing the complexities of this knowledge and it's associated skill set, reveals the medium's vast potential for artistic expression and ultimately liberates the creative voice."

Laura Steele '03

She received her B.A. in Photography from Bard College in 2003 after studies at Northwestern University, Massachusetts College of Art and Instituto Allende. Steele has worked as assistant and studio manager to Stephen Shore since 2003 and has managed the digital imaging facilities in the photography department at Bard College since 2004. Steele teaches fine art printing and digital imaging techniques for photographers at Bard College, and various other venues in the Hudson Valley area. She was appointed lecturer in photography at Yale in the Fall of 2011.
